A Graphene Sensor for Defect Detection and Predictive Maintenance in Composite Materials – “GRAPHOSITE”
“Defects can inadvertently be produced in composite materials either during the manufacturing process or during the normal service life of the component.
Some non-destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic testing and strain gauging exist for defect detection in composites. However, these have limitations (including cost) that have prevented them being used extensively. Notwithstanding, the Department for Business Innovation & Skills (BIS) UK Composites Strategy, insists that the UK needs to focus on advancing composites reliability and increase market share of existing sectors and ensure the use of composites in new sectors”
This project therefore seeks to develop GRAPHOSITE (A Graphene Sensor for Defect Detection and Predictive Maintenance in Composite Materials for use as a highly efficient, more convenient composite monitoring tool). Our technology will be based on an enhanced graphene-substrate interaction, with the ability to embed within a composite structure. The successful exploitation of the technology will result in cumulative revenue of £103m after 6 years in the market.

GRAPHOSITE participated in the UltraMAT Open Day 2020 Workshop – 30 January 2020
For consecutive year, GRAPHOSITE was invited to participate in the UltraMAT Open Day 2020 Workshop. The UltraMAT (www.ultramat.co.uk) is also an Innovate UK funded project, where Cambridge Nanomaterials Technology Ltd. (CNT) is one of its partners in charge of Exploitation and Dissemination.
The event took place at Murray Edwards College in Cambridge on the 30th of January. The GRAPHOSITE Project had an exhibition desk and James Essien, Project Leader from TWI gave a presentation about the GRAPHOSITE project and TWI activities. Dr Sofia Sampethai, who was formerly leading the GRAPHOSITE project, gave also a talk about her new involvement in other TWI projects.
This was a great opportunity for the GRAPHOSITE project to get the interest of other organisations in their activities.
GRAPHOSITE participation at the Nano-Carbon Enhanced Materials consortium meeting – Cambridge
GRAPHOSITE was invited to participate at the Nano-Carbon Enhanced Materials (NCEM) consortium meeting (joined to the Advanced Materials for Additive Manufacturing –AMAM- consortium meeting) on the 10th and 11th July 2019 at Wolfson College, Cambridge.
This consortium is run by Cambridge Nanomaterials Technology Ltd, one of the GRAPHOSITE partners who is in charge of Exploitation and Dissemination. The Nano-Carbon Enhanced Materials (NCEM) Consortium was put together in order to provide the consortium members a unique insight into nanocarbon materials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes, facilitate the commercial uptake and bring together potential users with a shared interest to address commercialisation challenges.
Dr Sofia Sampethai from TWI, Dr Nithin Amirth Jayasree from BCC and Thomas Greaves from Haydale were invited to present at the meeting. There was an exhibition desk with information on the GRAPHOSITE project. It was a great opportunity for the GRAPHOSITE project to get the interest of other organisations in their activities and in the forthcoming Open Day.
GRAPHOSITE Open Day – Registration Open!!!
The GRAPHOSITE Project is delighted to announce their 1st Open Day Workshop at Robinson College in Cambridge on the 20th November 2019.
